Upper Cervical Chiropractic

The top of the spine — the upper cervical region — is one of the most important and most delicate areas of the entire spinal column. The atlas (C1) and axis (C2) vertebrae sit directly beneath the skull and surround the brainstem, where the central nervous system transitions into the spinal cord. Even small misalignments in this area can have outsized effects on the nervous system, posture, and overall function.

At Providence Family Chiropractic in Lansing, MI, Dr. Laucher works with specific upper cervical techniques designed to address this region with precision rather than force.

Why the Upper Cervical Spine Matters

The atlas vertebra is unique. Unlike the vertebrae below it, it has no disc separating it from the skull or from the axis, and it cradles the base of the skull through two small joint surfaces. This design gives the head an enormous range of motion — but it also means the upper cervical spine has very little structural margin for error.

When the atlas or axis shifts out of its normal position, it can:

  • Alter the relationship between the head and the rest of the spine
  • Affect the muscles and joints that control head and eye position
  • Influence nerve pathways traveling between the brain and body
  • Contribute to recurring headaches, neck tension, and postural imbalance

Because of how central this region is, upper cervical chiropractors use techniques specifically designed to correct it without the broader rotational adjustments used elsewhere in the spine.

Techniques We Use

Knee-Chest Technique

The knee-chest technique is a specific upper cervical adjustment performed with the patient positioned face-down on a specialized table, with the chest supported and the knees resting below. This position takes muscular tension out of the cervical spine and allows the doctor to deliver a precise, low-force correction to the atlas or axis. Because the patient is fully relaxed and supported, the adjustment can be made with minimal pressure and no twisting of the head or neck.

Toggle Recoil

Toggle recoil is a classic upper cervical technique developed within the chiropractic profession to address atlas and axis misalignments with a quick, controlled, high-velocity contact and an immediate release — the “recoil.” The doctor’s hands make a brief, specific contact on the upper cervical vertebra, and the speed and precision of the contact, rather than depth or rotation, produces the correction. Patients often describe the adjustment as quick and surprisingly gentle.

What to Expect

Upper cervical care begins with a careful evaluation of the head and neck — including how the head sits on the spine, range of motion, muscle tone in the neck and shoulders, and any postural patterns that suggest an upper cervical issue. From there, your doctor will determine whether knee-chest, toggle recoil, or another technique is most appropriate for your specific presentation.

Adjustments to the upper cervical spine are typically very specific and very brief. The goal is not to “crack” or move multiple segments at once, but to deliver one precise correction where it is needed.

Who May Benefit

Upper cervical chiropractic care may be appropriate for patients dealing with:

  • Recurring headaches, including those originating from the base of the skull
  • Chronic neck stiffness and limited head rotation
  • Postural imbalance — a head that consistently tilts or shifts to one side
  • Jaw tension and pain related to head and neck alignment
  • Lingering symptoms following whiplash or auto accident injuries
  • Sensitivity to traditional rotational adjustments

Every patient is different. After your initial evaluation, your doctor will discuss whether upper cervical techniques are a good fit for your case or whether a broader approach would serve you better.
